Boland Landbou registered a good 22-5 win over fellow FNB Top 20 school's side Queen's, in a fast-paced and physical encounter on day two of the Cape Schools Week at SACS on Monday.
The match started well, both teams tearing into each other from the first whistle. Queen's put themselves under early pressure, with a knock-on in their own 22 in the opening minutes. The Landbou attack was fast and physical but well defended by Queen's in the initial stages.
The Eastern Cape side's good work, however, was undone as they gifted Landbou wing Bertie Visser with the ball, and he streaked away for a breakaway score. The Landbou pack laid down an early marker in the first scrum and their direct, hard-running approach put further pressure on Queen's.
Landbou landed a penalty to move to an early 10-0 lead. Queen's upped their game from the restart and began an attack of their own with a superb break from fullback Bernard Jjuuko moving them into the Landbou 22. Queen's pushed closer to the tryline, but the Landbou defence held firm.
Queen's continued to enjoy the majority of possession and started to make ground over the advantage line. The continuity of the Queen's attack was impressive and they continued to threaten the Landbou goal line. But the Boland side's defence was defiant, and they managed to keep Queen's out for the rest of the half, going into the break with their ten point lead intact, despite defending for much of the second quarter.
Landbou made a great start to the second half, and their dominance at the set-piece gave them good clean ball to play with. Some good play down the left hand touchline moved them into Queen’s territory, and the ball was swung wide to Visser to cross the line untouched for a crucial score. This strike inspired the Landbou players, and they started to hit their straps; the backline punching holes in the Queen's defence. The backs flew onto the ball at pace and they scored another try and a penalty to move into a 22-0 lead.
The game lost its tempo in the final quarter, and the teams traded possession with limited scoring opportunities. Queens finally broke through the stubborn Landbou defence to score a consolation try to end the game at 22-5 in favour of Boland Landbou.
