Queen's held off SACS with a composed performance that earned them a 21-12 win against the hosts in the final game of a highly successful Cape Schools Week rugby festival on Wednesday.
Queens, who have been in and around the FNB Top 20 this season, were favourites to win against SACS despite the home side's victory over Dale on day two. Queen's did have too much for SACS in the end and despite the close scoreline, Queen's were never in any real danger of losing the match.
The Queen's backline clearly had the better of their SACS counterparts in terms of pace and skill and wing Leon Makiwane left the SACS defence for dead after getting some space on the left hand touchline. He trotted in under the posts untouched for the opening score. Most of the first half was played out in the middle of the field without much penetration from either side. It was a stop-start affair and the half time whistle was a welcome sound to spectators after a dismal first half.
After the break, Queen's asserted their authority, controlling possession and territory. They continued to wear SACS down with accurate kicking keeping the home side pinned back in their own half. SACS's discipline began to falter and they found themselves 18 points back.
But once SACS did get in striking distance, they made it count, with eighthman Matthew Mellville going over to make the score 18-7 with twenty minutes to go. They struggled to build significantly on the score and they only started to use the ball well in the last fifteen minutes. They managed another score through Melville, but were punished again by the accurate boot Queen's fullback Athi Gxotiwe to end the match 21-12 in favour of the visitors.
