Monnas claim major scalp in Beeld win

Hoërskool Monument ended a hugely successful season in style with a fine 32-20 win against Waterkloof in the final of the Beeld 'macro' schools competition in Krugersdorp on Saturday.

It was a complete performance from Monnas in front of their home crowd, and they have now won their last thirteen games on the trot. Ever since a narrow loss against Paul Roos at the St John's Festival at Easter, Monnas have been unstoppable and had too much firepower for a strong Waterkloof side.

Monnas are filled with Craven Week players, and they dominated in the first half, scoring three tries on the way to a 25-10 lead at the break. Outside centre and captain for the day, Bradley Moolman, lead from the front and put in a superb individual performance.

He set-up two tries with line breaks and added one of his own - a clever play which left the Waterkloof defence dumbfounded. Loose forward Stefan Nel had taken the ball up strongly with Moolman in support. Moolman ripped the ball from Nel as he took the tackle and sped away. He was under the poles by the time the defence realise he even had the ball.

Right wing Jason Hofmeyer was also in inspired form, scoring a well-worked try and slotting a massive drop-kick from inside his own half. Flank JP Le Grange also deserves a mention for his sterling work around the park. He, along, with centre Vincent Scott also dotted down for tries.

To their credit, Waterkloof responded strongly to the halftime deficit, and put the Monnas defence under pressure after the break. Monnas discipline cost them and they were reduced to fourteen men in the desperate attempt to keep Klofies out. Waterkloof scored first in the second period and were right in the game at 25-15.

But Monument showed all of the skills that have made them such a formidable side this season, and they sealed the win with a second-half try. Waterkloof got a late consolation score, but it was not enough against a team that veteran coach 'Oupa' van der Merwe says "is one of the most talented he has ever coached" and is "filled with gamebreakers."
