SA Under -18 wing Craig Barry in action at the Craven Week
South Africa Under-18 unsurprisingly beat Namibia 93-10 at Outeniqua Park in George. The winners scored 13 tries, three by centre Piet Lindeque.
At half-time the home team led 46-10 as they dominated the Namibians in all facets of play. The SA Under-18 team looked to attack at almost every opportunity and regularly played the ball wide to their explosive wingers - Brian Skosana and Craig Barry. Lindeque and Andile Jho also had an outstanding match as the centre combination for the SA team, while fullback Riaan Brits also looked dangerous on attack.
However one of the features in this victory was the performance of the SA Under-18 halfback combination of scrumhalf Lohan Jacobs and flyhalf William van Wyk.
The forwards, led by lock Gerno Eksteen out-muscled the Namibians and dominated at scrum-time, at the line -outs and at the breakdown. The loose-forward trio of Siseko Jafta, Nizaam Carr and JJ Breedt also impressed at the breakdown and provided the hosts with plenty of turnover ball at the break down.
Centre Luandre Duvenhage was the only try-scorer for the Namibians with fullback Robert Herridge kicking a conversion and one penalty.
Namibia were one of the weakest teams at Craven Week this year - losing to Sounth Western Districts and Griqualand West Country Districts and drawing with Zimbabwe. They are a stronger team in tour in South Africa. In fact it is the Under-19 team which just failed to qualify recently for the Junior World Trophy when Zimbabwe beat them. When Argentina pulled out, SARU asked Nambia for a team and agreed that it shoiuld be stronger than the one which went to Craven Week.
SA Under-18 coach Eric Sauls said: "I happy with the result as this victory comes with virtually a new side to the one that defeated France on Saturday.
"We have now given all 31 players in our squad a run in the two international friendlies and I am extremely satisfied with the performance with the 25 players that were in action today. The guys played to the situation. We played the basics well and looked to attack when we had the Namibians at sixes and sevens.
"We'll enjoy this victory, travel back to Cape Town tomorrow and start preparing for our final match against France."
The SA Under-18s play their final international friendly fixture against France Under-18 at the Florida Park in Ravensmead on Saturday (16.00).
