SA U18 beat France again

Sat, 29 Aug 2009 22:44

SA Under-18 scrumhalf and captain Pieter Rademan

For the second time in eight days South Africa Under-18 beat France Under-18. This time at Florida Park in Cape Town the score was 39-6. Last Saturday the score was 39-3.

SA Under-18 scored six tries to nil.

The French were the first team to score when flyhalf Clément Ortazo kicked a penalty after the South Africans were penalised for offside. But the hosts hit back immediately when fullback Garth April crossed the try line to score the first try of the match which was converted by flyhalf William van Wyk. Van Wyk then kicked a penalty before Craig Barry added South Africa’s second try of the match.

Ortazo kicked a second penalty to take the score to 15-6 before the SA Under-18 team let loose and scored four second half tries thanks to Riaan Brits, Piet Lindeque, Emil Schwarz and replacement scrumhalf Pieter Rademan. Replacement flyhalf Johan Goosen converted two tries.

Coach Eric Sauls said: “It’s three international friendly victories out of three [two against France and one against Namibia], so I am extremely happy with the performance of the guys today,.

“The guys stuck to the basics and implemented what they were taught during the last few days at the High Performance camp. I was particularly impressed with the way our forwards stood up to the French. I think we also have talented backs and they showed their class today. There were definitely possible future Springboks in action today.

“There are many good, talented players in this country who I believe will be able to make it big at international level. Many of these guys will probably be invited to the South African Under-19 trials later this year. I also believe that a few players here could go all the way and play for the SA Under-20’s at the IRB World Junior World Championships.”
