Warren Seals - Captain of Kearsney

Thu, 11 Mar 2010 10:25

Flyhalf Warren Seals will captain Kearsney College in Saturday's FNB Classic Clashes encounter against Westville Boys' High.

The talented No.10 - who is his school's deputy head boy - describes the opportunity to lead his team as a "big honour".

"It's a huge achievement for me," he tells fnbclassicclashes.co.za, "and also a big honour to follow in the footsteps of players like Matt Stevens and Brad Barritt - just two of our more recent captains here at Kearsney."

Looking ahead to Saturday's match against Westville - the first FNB Classic Clash of 2010, Warren and his team are bracing themselves for a "very, very big game - especially as it's live on TV" and they have been working hard on the training ground this week.

"We also played a warm-up match against Voortrekker (from Pietermaritzburg) last weekend," he says. "Our defence wasn't tested much, but we were able to unleash our attack and we were happy with that facet of our game."

Fortunately for Kearsney, they boast a very experienced team - according to Seals - but they also have some new, exciting players in the mix.

He says: "We've got a few players back from 2008 and 2009 - so you could say that we've been building this squad for a few years now.

"We have some new guys in the mix, too, so we certainly have a good mix between youth and experience - all of which will hopefully give us a good start to the season come Saturday. It would be very pleasing to start with a win."

On a personal level, Seals - who began playing rugby in Grade Eight only - is hoping to build on a strong 2009 season which saw him play for the Natal Academy team at the National Academy Week last year.

Whilst he would love to play Craven Week this year, the incumbent from last year is still available for selection in 2010 ("a big obstacle" - according to Seals), but, he stresses, his main priority is Saturday's match and the fixtures that follow for his beloved Kearsney.

"I work hard on all aspects of my game - kicking, running and passing - as I would like to be the complete flyhalf," says Warren.

"I like the controlling aspect of playing at flyhalf and manipulating the match... you know, making the calls and being assertive - it's all part of playing at No.10."
