Dwayne Kelly - Captain of Westville

Thu, 11 Mar 2010 15:42

If Saturday's FNB Classic Clash between Westville Boys' High and Kearsney College opens up, then you better keep your eye on Westville's captain and scrumhalf, Dwayne Kelly.

Dwayne, who is in his third year of first team rugby at Westville, has played touch rugby for KwaZulu-Natal and Sevens rugby for the SA Under-19 team - he knows how to play with a rugby ball in his hands.

"I find that touch rugby helps me with my skills and Sevens has been a huge help for my defence, whilst also keeping my skills sharp," he tells fnbclassicclashes.co.za.

"I prefer fifteens to Sevens and touch, as I prefer more contact, but Sevens is a lot of fun and, like I said, both touch and Sevens have helped my 15-a-side game tremendously."

As a No.9 in the 15-man game, Dwayne - as one would expect - looks up to record-breaking Springbok scrumhalf Fourie du Preez, regarded by many as the premier halfback in world rugby at present.

"Whatever he does, he does well," enthuses Kelly. "Whether it's box-kicking, touch-kicking, passing, tackling or running - he sets standards and doesn't ever have a bad game."

Having Dwayne in top form on Saturday could go a long way towards helping his team to victory in this FNB Classic Clash - "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the entire Westville First XV".

"We've been working really hard this week at training," he reveals. "It doesn't get any bigger - the guys are all excited about playing on national TV and in front of their supporters on such a great day."

Westville won last year's encounter between these two teams - by 15-9 - and Dwayne is bracing himself for a backlash from Kearsney College in this year's FNB Classic Clash.

"We will have our work cut out, but it's important that we enjoy the occasion," says the Westville skipper - wise words indeed from such a young man.

"There are a lot of younger players in our team, so us seniors will need to keep them calm, and my job - as captain - will be to talk to everyone throughout the game to ensure that we give our best for the entire match."
