Itembelihle win night series

Sat, 13 Mar 2010 10:15

A happy Itembelihle team

Itembelihle of Port Elizabeth won the Night Series with a hard-fought 27-25 victory over Humansdorp Sekondêr in the Final.

Itembelihle started the tournament with a comprehensive 59-10 drubbing of last year's semifinalists McCarthy Street and followed that up with a 55-0 victory over Masipatisane High. In the quarterfinals Itembelihle beat James Jolobe High by 52-0.

The semifinal against Bertram High was another battle, but Itembelihle prevailed to win 16-5.

The final, was Itembelihle's fourth game of the week! They defeated Humansdorp in a game played at a furious pace. Both sides ran the ball at every opportunity. Itembelihle had the edge in the line-outs and scrums with Humansdorp having the edge in the breakdowns.

The half-time score was 10-10 all, but after half-time Humansdorp struck with two quick tries to lead 20-10. The windy conditions made goal-kicking very difficult.

Itembelihle struck back when hooker John Magenuka scored in the corner. Humansdorp came back and scored another try, to lead 25-15 with 12 minutes to go. Relentless attacking saw flank Sihle Mngautwa go over close to the poles, but fullback Banda missed the easy conversion. Itembelihle struck back from the kick-off and Banda made amends when he outstripped the defence to score next to the poles, He converted his own try for Itembelihle to take the lead 27-25 with three minutes to go. Humansdorp attacked but could not breach the Itembelihle defence again.

Itembelihle will now prepare for the Grey High festival, where they will play Graeme College of Grahamstown, Louis Botha of Bloemfontein and Daniël Pienaar of Uitenhage.
