Westville dominate FNB Classic Clash

Westville beat Kearsney 38-7 before a huge crowd in their FNB Classic Clash at Kearsney on Saturday afternoon, thus drawing level with Kearsney after 51 matches between the two, one of which was drawn.
The difference between the two sides was probably not as great as the scoreline suggested, but for one telling feature. Kearsney did well in the second half of the first half and for a long period in the second half. The difference was that Westville scored points when they had chances to do; Kearsney did not.
Westville started like a house on fire as their big pack promised to blow Kearsney away. They also seemed sharper and better organised. Kearsney looked less confident and yet they had 75% for the first half of the second half - 75% possession and no points. It is no wonder that their confidence seeped away as the game went on.
One of the effective strengths of the Westville pack was their ability to maul for long, powerful metres. They had four penalties in quick succession and mauled the second. They went wide going left and then Campbell swept over for a try with much bragging as he did so.
They had another long maul and then kicked the ball out for a five-metre line-out but lost the ball. Their fourth penalty Campbell kicked at goal. 8-0 after 15 minutes.
the came their second try working to the formula of penalty, five-metre line-out and a try - this time for diligent flank Ntando Phungose. When Kearsney were yet again penalised, Campbell made it 16-0.
Andrew Holland, Kearsney's brilliant centre, broke well twice but each time the promise was destroyed by handling errors.
Lively Westville scrumhalf Dwayne Kelly kicked high downfield. Kearsney fielded, dithered and then passed across the field but Campbell cut the pass short with an intercept. He juggled, ran away laughing and scored. 21-0 after 22 minutes.
Kearsney came more and more into the game, assisted by a string of four penalties against Westville. Twice they went for the line-outs, the third was a failed attempt at a goal, and the fourth produced a try. They again used a penalty to get a five-metre line-out and from it they bashed at the line till Mathew Jones scored. Deals converted. That made the half-time score 21-7.
Kearsney started the second half in dominating mood, especially after a long run by Holland. They were now standing up well to the Westville pack, but they could not score.
They were again on the attack near the touchline on their right when, inside their 22, Westville went left to the short side where Kelly gave a short pass to Keegan Boulle who was just in from touch. The tall wing raced down the touch-line and swerving brilliant past three defenders he raced nearly 80 metres downfield for the try in the left corner. 26-7 after 52 minutes.
At this stage Westville got more ball and got try number six. A penalty for a dangerous tackle gave them a line-out which they mauled many metres downfield on their left. The ball came back to Campbell who kicked on the diagonal. Steven Neveling bent to the ball but it struck his foot and flew into the Kearsney in-goal where the wing got to it just before the dead-ball line. 31-7 after 55 minutes.
The formula worked again - penalty + line-out + maul = try as they bashed at the line and Phungose picked up and flopped over. 38-7 with five minutes to play.
