Oudtshoorn surprise in FNB Classic

Mon, 16 Aug 2010 14:36

An ecstatic Oudtshoorn team celebrates its triumph

After years and years of defeats at the hands of Outeniqua Oudtshoorn beat their old foe 22-20 in their FNB Classic Clash in Oudtshoorn on Saturday. The long wait made the victory all the sweeter.

When their tall captain Willem du Toit raised the trophy up into the late afternoon sky there was joy on his face and on all the Oudtshoorn faces. The last time the Struisies had won was when Willem du Toit was just one year old. Before the match he said he was going into it "full of hope". Hope was realised.

There were only two points difference and Kwaggas scored one more try than Struisies but it did not matter. Juts the victor mattered  and nothing could diminish that.

The Kwaggas scored first when their flyhalf Tertius Kruger dribbled through to score. Fullback Johan Cronjé converted and kicked a penalty goal. But Divan Nel kicked three penalties to keep the Struisies in touch.

The Kwaggas led 10-9 at the break but then  Rory Bell's try and Divan Nel's conversion from touch gave the home side the lead early in the second half. The lead was soon challenged when eighthman Marnus Smith scored and Johan Cronjé converted. 17-16 ton the Kwaggas. Two goals by Struisies and one by Kwaggas made it 22-20. But it was not over. At the death the Kwaggas had a penalty in an easily kickable  position. Imagine the tension - on both sides. Imagine the disappointment when the kick was missed and the noisy sigh of relief from the Struisies' supporters that was more like a cheer.

The Struisies' scrumhalf Percy Williams, South Western Districts' Craven Week scrumhalf, was named man of the match. He shone both on attack with his sharp breaks and on defence.
