Bishops backs too slick for SACS

In a highly-entertaining fixture played on the Piley Rees field on Saturday, Diocesan College (Bishops) were made to work hard for a 43-18 win against the South African College High School (SACS).
In what is thought to be the oldest schoolboy derby in the world, SACS were tenacious and played good rugby but it was Bishops who proved the old adage correct: the ball is faster than the man.
For the first quarter of the match the teams were evenly matched as SACS took the game to their opponents who were clear favourites going into the game. SACS tackled well and low and produced some nice passages of play.
Bishops broke the deadlock on seventeen minutes though as they themselves patiently built the phases until prop Thsepo Motale worked himself into space and crashed over for the score. Fullback Tim Swiel converted as he was to do five of Bishop's seven tries on the day.
Bishops touched down again soon after as playmaker extraordinaire
Dillyn Leyds began to find his touch. Executing a classic one-two with centre Paul Kuiper he created space for left-wing Uwe Jacobs who raced home from fifty metres out to score.
SACS continued to plug away and struck back soon after when flyhalf Ryan van Rensburg pounced on a turnover to set up a score for fullback Joshua Jacobsen. Bishops finished the half strongly though and put the game to bed with three quality tries.
The first two came as SACS were attacking and turned the ball over, Leyds again showing electric pace and skill as he set up Liam Petersen from long range. The second again started a long way out but this time Bishops were made to work a bit harder and after going wide left and then swinging back to the right flank Evan Strauss got over in the right corner.
Directly from the kickoff Leyds was at it again as he easily beat the SACS defence and unleash centre Nathan Nel for another long-range try to leave the score at 33-10 at the interval.
Van Rensburg struck a penalty for SACS soon after the interval but it was Bishops who were over the try-line first as burly lock Cameron Doyle burst over the line after a patient build up and some sloppy defending from SACS out wide. Doyle, a formidable physical specimen, deserved a score as he worked tirelessly the entire match something which cannot be said of the rest of his pack who got a bit lazy toward the end of the match.
Leyds, a young Quade Cooper, with great feet, vision and a silky pass set up Bishops final try. He passed to his centre, looped and received the ball back before whipping it wide to Jacobs for his second try.
As one would expect SACS showed great passion and commitment to the death and were rewarded with a well-worked try. Moving the ball through the hands SACS used the entire width of the field before Jacobsen again showed what a good little finisher he is.
Both teams have their final matches of the season next Saturday and both are traditional derbies. Bishops host Rondebosch Boys' High (kick-off 11.30) and SACS host Wynberg Boys' High (kick-off 15.15)
