JC Belstead - Punt Captain

Tue, 17 Aug 2010 10:53

JC Belstead - The captain of Punt

Hoërskool Punt in the lovely coastal town of Mossel Bay is hosting Langenhoven Gimnasium from up in Oudtshoorn in what is the big match of the year for the two schools, an FNB Classic Clash. JC Belstead is the captain of the home side - a stand-in captain.

The regular captain, flank Jacques Henry is ill and will not play. So JC has been plonked in the hotseat against a side they have not beaten in their junior years. But then JC is used to change.

JC? Juan-Corné, born in Mossel Bay on 21 May 1992. He did his primary schooling at Hartenbos Laerskool, moving up to Punt in 2006, when he was in Grade Eight.

JC has made a great change on the rugby field. He started playing when he was six and was a scrumhalf. He stayed a scrumhalf till last year when he changed.

The change was radical but he says it was "because my body changed". It was a remarkable change and for the last two years he has been a tighthead prop - and he has another year of schoolboy rugby as he is just in Grade 11.

JC says that his team is a united bunch of players and that is their real strength. The team started well, then struggled for a while and has improved lately. the match he enjoyed most was against Nico Malan of Humansdorp whom Punt beat 8-7.

Matches between Punt and Langenhoven Gim have traditionally been close and JC sees the game as a challenge. "We are ready for them," he says.

JC is not a surfer, though great opportunities are at hand but he does fish.

At the moment is focus is on the FNB Classic Clash with Langenhoven Gimnasium on Saturday.
