Salman Claassen will lead Langenhoven in their FNB Classic Clash
Salman Claassen, captain of Langenhoven Gim in Oudtshoorn, has made a big rugby journey this year to lead his team out onto the first in the game of the season, an FNB Classic Clash with Hoërskool Punt in Mossel Bay.
Salman was born in Port Elizabeth but his long journey is not from PE to Oudtshoorn. It is from centre to prop.
Last year he was in the First XV at centre when they beat Punt 10-0. He started playing rugby when he started walking, he says and he went to the Under-13 Craven Week, but always as a centre. It is a long, long journey and a lot more difficulty than going down the Robertson Pass to Mossel Bay and that ground high up on a windy promontory looking out onto the Indian Ocean.
The family moved to Oudtshoorn and Salman went to Oudtshoorn-Noord Laerskool before moving to Langenhoven Him in Grade Eight.
He is now in Grade 12 and will be finished with school next year, intending to head back to Port Elizabeth to train to become a plumber.
He captained teams at Under-13 and Under-14 but this is his first year as captain of the First XV. He enjoys it, the responsibility of leading by example, the chance to take others with you.
He says that this season his side started well, has never played poorly and has generally given a good account of themselves. The match he enjoyed most was against Oakdale when Gim lost 12-6 but played well. He has seen Punt plays and knows that Saturday's match will not be easy but "we are ready for them". In particular, he has faith in his pack of forwards.
Salman Claassen was born on 7 March 1991, his father a former Eastern Province flank.
