Marching to Bloemfontein

Wed, 18 Aug 2010 12:12

(c) Doug Fitz-Gerald

On Thursday 13 busloads of school boys will leave Stellenbosch and move up the N1, over the mountains and on to Bloemfontein. They will go in two convoys.

In all 700 Paul Roos Boys will head for Grey College for the final schools burst of the 2010 season. Those playing on Friday leave on the early buses, those on Saturday on the 21.45 bus.

The 700 Paul Roos boys will stay with 700 Grey College boys, mostly opponent with opponent. Though the 1st XV match surpasses all others in interest and in value of a sorts, there is a lot of other activity between the two great schools. There is golf, biathlon, table tennis, tennis, debating, chess, mountainbiking, squash and two soccer matches.

There are also 17 hockey matches and 27 rugby matches.

It is huge.

The first rugby teams meet at 15.10 on Saturday.

For Paul Roos this is no easy matter. There is the travelling, the psychological knock the Western Province team, a strengthened Paul Roos side, was thrashed by Free State, which some regarded as a weakened Grey side, and there is the added determination Grey will have after losing 9-3 in Stellenbosch last year, prompting a long howl of protest about the refereeing. But Paul Roos are looking forward to it.

They believe that the hard fields suit the way they want to play and believe that they have the pack to stand up to Grey. After all half the pack were on the winning side last year - the whole front row and JJ Jordaan on the flank. Paul Roos believe that they have more than a fighting chance if their tight phases, defence and discipline are good and they take their chances.

But Frans van Niekerk of Paul Roos says that above all they cherish the good relationship with Grey.
