Preview: Punt vs Langenhoven Gim
Thu, 19 Aug 2010 16:57
Langenhoven go down over the Robertson Pass to lovely Mossel Bay to play Hoërskool Punt on the field on the point that looks out over the Indian Ocean, an FNB Classic clash, the biggest occasion of the season for both schools. Ostrich meets fish.
It is likely to be a close match as matches between these two schools usually are. The last time they met Langenhoven Gim won 10-0.
If you look at common opponents, Langenhoven look the better of the two. Both beat Saevuna - Punt 15-12, Langenhoven Gim 37-8; both lost to Oakdale - Punt 38-0, Langenhoven Gim 12-6; both lost to Outeniqua - Punt 41-7. Langenhoven Gim 31-7. Not that that will count much come Saturday on Punt's field with all the uncertainty of an intense derby.
Neither school is as high-flying as Oakdale, Outeniqua and Oudtshoorn in South Western Districts but both are active on the rugby field and not afraid of opposition.
Langenhoven Gim have a Craven Week player in flyhalf Johannes Potgieter and two who have been to Academy week in scrumhalf Terblanche Bower and flank Louw Swanepoel. The other flank Laclue Barnard was in last year's SARU High Performance squad.
Punt have two players who were at the Academy Week - hooker Allan Firmani, who is a provincial angler, and Frans-Louis Maritz - and two who have been to the Grant Khomo Week - flyhalf Ivan Janse van Rensburg and Linden Rhode.
Both captains are loosehead props, which may not be unusual abut what is unusual is that till recently they were backs - Salman Claassens a centre and JC Belsted a scrumhalf. The move is not surprising as they are each the heaviest player on their side - Salman at 105kg, JC at 110kg.
