Noord-Kaap carries on winning

Mon, 23 Aug 2010 14:25

Noord-Kaap's leader, Herman van Niekerk

There is an interesting rugby tradition at Noord-Kaap. They have a flagpost with a Northerns sports flag on it next to the A-field (Pirates).

It gets hoisted only if the First XV plays at Pirates.

For as long as the First XV wins at Pirates, the flag will stay at the top.

If the team loses, the flag will be lowered to half-mast for the next home game. We played our last home game last Saturday and for the second season the flag stayed at the top! Noord-Kaap beat Afrikaanse Hoërskool of Kroonstad (Rooiskool) 44-13.

Furthermore, Noord-Kaap's school's Under-15 side also played in a semifinal for the KOVSIE/VOLKSBLAD league. They played against HTS Welkom and won 43-0. It is rare for both teams in finals to come from the same school.

Noord-Kaap is marching on! After being crowned the Griqualand West rugby champions the previous week, Hoërskool Noord-Kaap advanced to the semifinals of the KOVSIE/VOLKSBLAD league for the Central Region of SA (Griqualand West, Griffons and Free State).

Noord-Kaap enjoyed their massive win in a match which at times delivered brilliant rugby. The strong August wind did its best to spoil the rugby proceedings on the field.

Northerns played the first half into the wind and showed excellent composure and structure. With fetcher Hendrik du Plessis at the forefront of proceedings, they gave Rooiskool a tough time and denied them almost any ball to play with.

Du Plessis is a master on the ground and as strong as any the moment he gets his paws on the ball. Despite the strong wind into their faces, Northerns crossed the Rooi goalline three times in the first half when tries were scored by fullback Henco Olivier, captain and eighthman, Herman van Niekerk and loosehead prop Cobus Cohn.

Flyhalf Gihan Cloete succeeded with two conversions and a penalty. AHS also scored twice during this half with the last try being a rebound off the goalpost after an unsuccessful penalty attempt. The teams left the field for half time with the score at 22-10 for Noord-Kaap.

One would have expected Noord-Kaap to play a kicking game in the second half with the strong wind at their backs, but they did not. They kept ball in hand and completely outplayed the opposition. Noord-Kaap scored another three tries during the second half - by left wing Kobus du Plessis, scrumhalf Zane le Roux and inside centre, Len le Roux. Again, Cloete converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal.

The final showdown of the season will be the KOVSIE/VOLKSBLAD league final on Saturday when Northerns Under-15 team plays against Sentraal from Bloemfontein and the First XV will take on Hentie Cilliers from Virginia. Both matches will take place at Shimlapark in Bloemfontein.
