Windy draw on the Piley

The north wind blew straight down the Piley Rees Field at Bishops on Saturday and had an emphatic effect on the match, each side scoring all its points in its half with the wind for a 19-all draw between Bishops and Rondebosch.

The two schools meet twice a year and this was the first draw since 1978.

Rondebosch had first use of the wind, scored three tries and led 19-0 at the break. Bishops were with the wind in the second half and also scored three tries for 19 points.

This was a great turnaround for Rondebosch who lost the first encounter 38-10 on their own field.

They scored first when their captain Rayn Smid broke away from a driving maul to score and there was a repeat a few minutes later to make the score 14-0 - penalty, five-metre line-out, maul, try.

Bishops as is their wont try to run against the wind and made mistakes, while the Rondebosch flyhalf William Keet, grandson of the great Keith Oxlee, drove them back with accurate kicking.

Then the Rondebosch backs swung into action and sent wing Giovanni Hofmeyr over for a try, the last score of the half, though Bishops should well have scored just before the break but hands let them down.

Early in the second half the Bishops scrumhalf Guy Whitfield scored a brilliant individual try, running all of 50 metres to score it.

Bishops were now on top and their forwards did well against the strong Rondebosch pack. They tapped a penalty and strong flank Evan Strauss drove over. 19-14.

The try that drew the match was a brilliant one as speedy left wing Uwe Jacobs tip-toed down the touchline, leaving opponents clutching, to score.

For the remaining 11 minutes Bishops were largely in the ascendancy as both sides missed penalty attempts to win the match
