Grey High wins @lantic Sevens

Mon, 06 Sep 2010 10:36

Grey head to the tryline - again!

The Grey High 1st Sevens team excelled at the Uitenhage leg of the annual @lantic Seven-a-side rugby tournament this past weekend to win the tournament in emphatic fashion.

Throughout the tournament, the Grey side produced rugby of an extremely high standard and managed some excellent results during the course of the day.

Results of the pool games are as follows:

Grey beat Bertsig 65-5 (11 tries to 1)
Grey beat John Walton 40-0 (6 tries to 0)
Grey beat Despatch 40-26 (6 tries to 4)

In the semifinals, Grey met Framesby and despite racing to a 24-5 lead through some great attacking rugby, Framesby managed to narrow the gap when Grey were reduced to six players after receiving a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, which included a try after the hooter had sounded. Despite this, Grey managed a reasonably comfortable 24-19 win to progress to the tournament final.

In a classic display of Sevens rugby, Grey faced the only other unbeaten side, Daniel Pienaar, in what was meant to be tightly contested affair. Both teams were in a league of their own and were totally dominant throughout the day.

However, Grey showed their true class and played superb clinical Sevens rugby to totally demolish the Daniel Pienaar outfit by five tries to one, which saw them win the final by 31 points to 7.

The tournament win allows Grey High to participate at the Champion of Champions tournament to be held in Rustenberg from November 4-5 this year - a tournament which sees the winning teams from all the respective tournaments compete for the SA Schools @lantic Sevens title.

Grey High managed to score 32 tries in only five games, amassing 200 points in the process at an average of 40 points per game, whilst only conceding eight tries throughout the day.

Congratulations to Sergeal Peterson for being selected as Player of the Tournament, despite being in only Grade 10.

Sergeal will join all the other players selected as 'Player of the Tournament' in their respective legs - and will represent the @lantic Sevens Team at an International Sevens tournament at the end of the year.
