Huge Queen's sporting celebration

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 17:01

As part of the celebration of the 150th Anniversary Queen's College are hosting a winter sports festival which starts on Monday morning and 28 April to Saturday, 3 May. The festival includes not only rugby but also hockey, squash and cross-country fixtures.

In total there will be almost 800 boys being hosted and participating in sports in Queenstown over the next week. This is a wonderful advertisement for traditional schools sport in South Africa but no doubt a huge logistical exercise for the host.

Fourteen rugby, 12 hockey, 12 squash and 10 Under-13 rugby teams plus cross country runners will take part, with the senior rugby on the Rec, the hockey on the Astro, squash at the Queen’s and Sandringham courts, Under-13 rugby at Queen’s Junior and the Rec and the cross country events comprising a mountain race, a Bowker’s Kop team race, one at Parker’s Folly and a Berry Dam Relay.

One of the highlights will be the formal Winter Sport Dinner in the marquee on the Wilkinson Field at which former Springbok rugby captain François Pienaar was to have been the speaker. Pienaar will be unable to attend as he has to be abroad, but two Old Boys of the school who have represented South Africa on the rugby fields of the world, Rob Kempson and Kaya Malotana, will be present. Well-known Radio Algoa DJ Darron Mann will be master of ceremonies.
