Gimmies' sports festival - Day 1

Mon, 28 Apr 2008 23:49

Paarl Gim is celebrating its 150th birthday and the famous school has 16 rugby teams at its birthday parting, apart from other sporting teams.

There are 16 teams taking part in Gim's 150th birthday celebrations. It is a weekend of great sporting activity at the great school.

The teams are: Windhoek Hoërskool, Glenwood (Durban), Diamantveld (Kimberley), Pionier (Vryheid), Duineveld (Upington), Oakdale (Riversdale), Natal Academy, FNB Invitation XV, Roos (Stellenbosch), Framesby (Port Elizabeth),Boland Landbou (Paarl), Daniël Pienaar (Uitenhage), Paarl Boys' High, Outeniqua, Affies (Pretoria) and the hosts Paarl Gim.

The Gimmies celebrated in style with a big win over the strong Affies side from Pretoria, scoring three tries to nil. Petrus Theart, Jacquin Rogers and JR Esterhuizen scored the tries, all converted by JR Potgieter.

Boys' High have not been showing their usual power but they got stuck into the strong Outeniqua side and scored five tries to one in beating them more comfortably than the score suggests, but their goal-kicking was not great. Johan Wilken and Kyle Strydom each scored two tries for Boys' High and Burger Kraemer got the fifth. Marcel Groenewald scored Outeniqua's only try.

Boland Landbou completed the Paarl hat-trick with a close win over the strong Daniël Pienaar side from Uitenhage, winning by a conversion. The sides each scored two tries. Heinrich Steyl and Rossouw Kruger scored for Landbou, Louis Kruger and Johan Louwrens for Daniël Pienaar.

Glenwood suffered against Windhoek, but then they did not have their full side as many of their first-choice players are at present in Japan as South Africa's representatives at the Sanix World Youth Rugby Tournament.
