Glenwood withstand Westville pressure

Tue, 13 May 2008 12:51

After Glenwood's triumph in Japan all the pressure was on them to perform against a team that have a wonderful home record.

The game was scheduled for the ABSA Stadium as a curtain raiser to the Sharks vs Cheetahs Super 14 encounter but Westville understandably decided to decline the offer as they would have a better chance on Bowden's.

The game went perfectly to plan for the Green Machine in the opening exchanges with a neat move form a maul that was formed off a line-out on the Westville 22m. Lock Steen Smith took the ball went to ground and then popped it to flanker Ruan Burr-Dixon who sped around the blindside to go over untouched. Flyhalf Storm Pearton missed the conversion, 5-0.

In the 10th minute a flowing move from the Glenwood backline resulted in a try by centre Dries Els between the uprights, Pearton conversion. The score would remain 12-0 until half-time.

Westville stood firm for most of the 2nd half until a Pearton penalty in the 60th minute stretched the lead to 15-0. Shortly thereafter captain Shaun Malton barged his way from the 22 only to be brought down millimetres shy of the whitewash. He however stayed calm and neatly offloaded the ball to lock Steen Smith to wrap up the match. Pearton converted to complete Glenwood scoring for the day, 22-0.

Westville would go on to touchdown in the dying minutes for a consolation try. Final score 22-5.
