Thu, 15 Apr 2004 11:40

School Profile

We profile Glenwood High School of Durban.

Glenwood, now amongst trees in Glenwood as the ridge  of hills slopes down towards Durban Bay, was started by Dr Samuel Campbell, father of the great poet Roy, in central Durban under the Durban Technical Institute as the Day Continuation School for Boys.  The school’s first move was from Russell Street to Warwick Avenue, a building which became the Durban Technical College.  In 1916 the school was renamed the Technical High School.  In 1920 it moved to its present site and in 1934 changed its name to Glenwood High School, a boys’ school which now has 1200 boys.

Information

School motto: Humani nihil alienum (Nothing human is strange to me) - from the playwrite Terence.
Date of foundation: 1910
School address: 1 Nicolson Road, Glenwood, 4001

Rugby

Rugby is an important part of life at Glenwood, which runs 19 teams.

Famous Old Boys

The following Glenwood Old Boys have played international rugby – Mauritz van den Berg, Roger Sherriff, whose grandson James is now a provincial referee, Don Walton, Rodney Gould and John Allan, who played tests for both South Africa and Scotland.

Traditional Rivals

Biggest rivals are DHS on the other side of Berea Road.  That is always an important match in Durban.  There is also great rivalry with Maritzburg College, Hilton, Michaelhouse and Kearsney.
