There was a surprise in the Beeld Trofee semifinal on Tuesday afternoon when Florida, not for the first time, upset Monument's seemingly unstoppable march to the Final. HTS MIddelburg stood up well to Klofies.

There were fewer matches but some top ones, involving the top sides, some of them in organised competitions, some playing for the sheer thrill of it, lots of them under pressure.

There was yet another long weekend to disrupt the smooth flow of schools rugby but there were still some big results - above all Gim's win over third-placed Boys' High in the crunch match of their season.

This has been a harder year than usual for composing the FNB Top 20 because of the constant changes and surprises, which tell the truth that we all know - that there are so many outstanding rugby teams in South African schools.

This is the first FNB Top 20 for some time. There have been holidays but there were matches, for example at Cape Schools Week in King William's Town, and then again this last week.

The big match of this past week was the Grey-Affies match in Bloemfontein which Grey won 16-11, a tense affair which Affies were possibly unfortunate to lose as they played especially well.

The top has taken a tumble. Noord-Kaap much to their joy brought Affies down to earth, and that was not the only surprise for Pionier of Vryheid, not on the Top 20, beat Westville. So there are changes.

Bloemfontein is still the centre of schools rugby attention - this time when Paarl Boys' High came to play. But that was not the only focus of attention in the latest FNB Top 20 rankings.

We had all looked forward to the big clash between Grey College and Affies in Bloemfontein but excessive water kiboshed that. But there were still several interesting results which have changed the FNB Top 20 considerably.

Upheavals continue in the wake of Wildeklawer and its surprisingly big scores. It shows again how we could come close to accurate and even absolute if we had everybody playing everybody else.

There has been a massive shake-up this week following what has happened in the various Easter Tournaments and there could be more to come after the next weekend. The shake-up has occurred as the strong have come marching in, teams that were not there last week.

After examining evidence, careful consideration and debate we have produced the final FNB Top 20 of 2010. The easy part of the job was choosing the top two teams. After that it became difficult. In our deliberations we took into consideration the calibre of opposition as much as results.

There was little rugby for schools this week but still two matches which affect top sides. Paarl Gim had a huge win over Framesby and Noord-Kaap a big win over Hentie Cilliers, both in winning competitions.

The great match of last weekend, Grey College vs Paul Roos, 1 versus 3, ended in a narrow win for Grey but lots of honour for Paul Roos who scored four tries to two.
