Young gets Baa-Baas job

Thu, 14 Feb 2008 22:04

Cardiff Blues coach Dai Young will take charge of the Barbarians on their three-game tour in July.

The Baa-Baas will face England at Twickenham and an International XV in Brussels while the third fixture is to be finalised.

"I'll work with top-class players from different nations and I'm looking forward to it tremendously," Young told BBC Sport.

"Playing for the Baa-Baas was always something to relish and from what I've heard nothing much has changed."

Former Wales skipper and Lions prop Young played six times for the invitational team, including high-profile matches against New Zealand and Australia in Twickenham and Cardiff.

"It is a real honour for me to be invited to coach the Barbarians at this stage in my career," he added.

"Even against the toughest opposition the Barbarians have the knack of getting the delicate balance right between match preparation, meeting people and turning in winning performances."

Young will be hoping he can emulate the achievements of Blues duo Tom Shanklin and Martyn Williams, who were part of the Barbarians team that defeated World Champions South Africa at Twickenham last year.

"We are delighted that Dai Young has accepted our invitation to take charge of what promises to be another star-studded squad on this year's tour," said Barbarians president Micky Steele-Bodger.

"We have followed Dai's impressive progress as a coach closely and feel that both he and the club will benefit from working together on the tour."
