Scotland gets a peak into ELV Larder

Tue, 29 Jul 2008 16:03

Former British and Irish Lions defence coach Phil Larder will be visiting Murrayfield in August to share his insight with a number of Scottish coaches and players.

Larder was part of the management of the 2001 and 2005 British and Irish Lions tours, and defence coach when England won the International Rugby Board (IRB) World Cup in 2003.

Larder's visit will include working with pro players from Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, pro-team coaches, national age-grade coaches, Scottish Rugby Union's (SRU) performance development staff as well Scottish Women's Rugby Union staff.

The one-day session will take place on Wednesday August 20.

SRU's senior Performance Development Manager (PDM), Grant McKelvey, said: "The day will include looking at strategies around the new Experimental Law Variations [ELV's].

"Hopefully Phil's visit will be the first of many from world-class experts, which will assist in the development of our own coaches and ultimately benefit our players at all levels as the PDMs will ensure all tips are shared with our colleagues in club development," McKelvey added.

The Northern Hemisphere rugby nations, who were initially the most averse to the introduction of new laws, will be using the ELVs officially as of August 1.
