Why Byrne said 'no' to the Sharks

Ospreys and Wales hero: Lions fullback Lee Byrne

British & Irish Lions and Ospreys fullback, Lee Byrne reaffirmed his commitment to his club after rejecting a lucrative offer from the Sharks to switch to the Currie Cup and Super 14 competitions.

Former Swansea and current Sharks coach, John Plumtree was determined to make a big name signing and after their failed bid to sign the Welsh star they opted to pursue Argentine playmaker Juan Martin Hernandez.

It is believed that the Sharks as well as their coastal rivals, the Stormers, approached Byrne during the Lions' tour of South Africa about a move from the Ospreys.

However, Byrne was initially top of Plumtree’s shopping list but the Six Nations Grand Slam winner remained loyal to the Ospreys, saying: "Thanks, but no thanks.

"It’s flattering to receive this kind of attention and to be linked to other clubs, but I'm an Ospreys man through and through."

"It’s my home region,"Byrne told the Western Mail.

Negotiations between the South African coastal outfit and Hernandez have been successfully completed and they are awaiting a work permit so the big-money deal can be finalised

The 27-year-old Hernandez starred during the 2007 World Cup in France as he guided Argentina to a shock third-place finish.

"Hernandez will be a great asset when we are able to get him. I hope he can join us as quickly as possible," said Plumtree.

Sharks backs boss Grant Bashford belives the Pumas star's utility value will be a great asset for the Sharks.

"Hernandez pretty much dominated the 2007 World Cup for Argentina.

"He’s a great player and not only covers the No 10 position but 12 and 15 as well. He has an excellent kicking game and he could really have a massive impact in our squad."
