'Roberts can't rest on Lions laurels'

Mon, 20 Jul 2009 11:13

Celebrations: Jamie Roberts and Brian O''Driscoll

Cardiff Blues coach Dai Young says that despite his good form on the recent British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa, Jamie Roberts must look to take his game up to another level again.

Roberts mad a huge impact during the Lions series, which earned him the man of the series award after forging an outstanding midfield partnership with Brian O’Driscoll.

However, Young believes there’s much more to come from the 22-year-old centre and he can't afford to rest on his Lions laurels.

"He’s only had a season in the game at the top level in that position," Young told the Western Mail.

"Let’s hope Jamie realises that.

"As good as he is now, I still feel there’s a lot more to come from him.

"It’s important that’s emphasised to him.

"Let’s all celebrate his performances with the Lions and we should be very proud of them, but it’s our job to keep on pointing out things which he can improve.

"He’s world-class now, but there’s no doubting he can be better again.

"Hopefully he will look to improve and be that better player and I'm sure he will.

"As good as he is – and he’s a phenomenal player at the minute – he can still improve his game and take himself to another level again."

Roberts caused havoc for the Springboks with his explosive running, which will ensure that he becomes a marked whenever he steps onto the field.

However, Young is worried about the attention he'll get off the pitch.

"He knows he’s going to be targeted in games and he understands that," said the former Wales skipper.

"I don't think that’s going to be an issue for him.

"We've got to protect him a little bit off the field because he’s certainly going to attract the media attention and that’s something he enjoys as well.

"Unfortunately that has a nasty way of coming back and biting you as well."

Roberts is currently enjoying a well-deserved five-week break from rugby and he won't be back in action for the region until towards the end of September.
