'Geech' admits to talks with Lions boss

Wed, 28 Oct 2009 14:03

Does Lions legend Ian McGeechan have one more tour in him?

While he has ruled himself out of contention for the head coach role, British and Irish lions legend Ian McGeechan has confirmed that he may have some role to play with the 2013 tour to Australia.

McGeechan, coach of the Lions earlier this year in South Africa, admitted to Sky Sports that he had been involved in discussions with Chief Executive John Feehan about a possible role in the planning of the preparations ahead of the 2013 adventure.

"John has always asked me to have some involvement in the preparations for Australia from a rugby perspective," McGeechan admitted when speaking to Sky Sports.

"It's great because that's the bit that has probably been left until last or not done before so I'm looking forward to that."

Always willing to contribute to his beloved Lions, McGeechan made it clear that while there had been discussions, nothing had yet been finalised.

"It would be more as someone to consult with and just try and use my experience to do the best in that preparation," he explained.

"I think it's in everybody's interest that the Lions have the best programme and that they are competitively well prepared ahead of the Test series.

"A competitive Test series then is important for both Australia and the Lions."
