Robinson backs 'Geech' for Lions

Thu, 22 Nov 2007 09:38

Former England coach Andy Robinson believes Ian McGeechan should lead the British Lions on their tour of South Africa in 2009. Wasps director of rugby McGeechan could return to the role of Lions head coach which he held in 1989, 1993 and 1997. And Robinson, now coaching Edinburgh, claims the 61-year-old Scot is perfect for the role. Robinson described McGeechan as "an outstanding choice" for the position. "I think he's a quality coach. His depth of knowledge and understanding of the game in all its facets - attack, defence, set-piece - is just phenomenal," said Robinson. McGeechan led the Lions to series victories over Australia and South Africa, either side of a 2-1 series defeat in New Zealand. Sir Clive Woodward's Lions were whitewashed 3-0 in New Zealand in 2005. Scotland coach Frank Hadden has revealed he could have a role to play with the Lions in two years' time. "I have been asked if I am available for the Lions, and of course I am," he said. "It would be an honour to be involved." The role of tour manager for the three-Test series against the world champion Springboks has been filled by Wales legend Gerald Davies, while Scot Andy Irvine was this week named as chairman of the Lions board.
