McGeechan to coach 2009 Lions

Sat, 03 May 2008 11:44

London Wasps Director of Rugby Ian McGeechan is set to be named as the British & Irish Lions head coach for a record fourth time.

According to a report in the Guardian newspaper,  England, Wales and Ireland did not submit a name for the coaching position on next year's Lions tour to South Africa, leaving the way open for the veteran Scotsman.

McGeechan's appointment would also increase the chances of Wasps head coach Shaun Edwards being named as assistant coach as the pair have worked well together at Wasps.

The official announcement will be made on Wednesday, May 14.

McGeechan was the Lions coach in 1989, 1993 and 1997 - helping the tourists to an historic triumph on SA soil in '97.

In 2005, he coached the midweek side on the British & Irish Lions tour to New Zealand on the invitation of Sir Clive Woodward.
