Young Cavaliers hunting Sharks

Wed, 27 Aug 2008 16:38

Boland Cavaliers coach Deon Davids has picked two young centres for their Currie Cup Round Nine match against the Sharks  in Wellington on Friday.

Although centre and captain Piet van Zyl - the Cavaliers' most experienced player - is fit and available, Davids opted for promising young Cornell Hendricks to partner Lionel Cornelius in midfield.

It could be seen as a gamble, but Davids is confident that Hendricks will pass this test.

"Cornell has been making great strides over the past few weeks .In his only match for Boland against the Cheetahs a month ago he excelled on defence, but also showed in club games that he has a great eye for a gap.

"I am confident Hendricks and Cornelius will do us proud," Davids said.

In another change at the back Neil Papier comes in for Marnus Hugo at scrumhalf.

Up front Angelo Brinkhuis will partner Zolani Mofu at flank in the place of Whalied Heyns, while strongman Janro van Niekerk returns to the starting line-up at loosehead.

Frikkie Spies greater aggression sees him come in at lock at the expense of Namibian international Nico Esterhuyse.

In a surprise move Davids has picked former Blue Bull scrumhalf Danie van der Merwe on the bench. He is currently in great form for the Ikeys.

He obviously knows the Bible well
He is just deflecting attention away from his lack of coaching knowledge
