Griquas stay on top

Sat, 18 Jul 2009 17:52

Griquas, leaders after the opening week, are still sitting pretty at the top of the Currie Cup standings after they recorded their second win - a 36-11 defeat of the Leopards in Kimberley on Saturday.

Nippy scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius helped himself to two tries in the process.

The half time score was 19-8 for the home side.

The Griquas again showed why they have been consistently among the top six teams in the country and they had the maturity - gained through experience at this level - that the men from Potchefstroom still do not possess.

The visitors tried hard and competed at times, but bad tackling, disorder in the line-outs and aimless kicking were their downfall on the day.

It was clear that they weren't as sharp for this level as the home side.

The Leopards started out well and looked like causing an upset at stages, especially with flyhalf Clayton Durand's accurate goal kicking on the day.

But the Leopards shot themselves in the foot through some aimless kicking downfield, which only resulted in the Griquas' dangerous backs - like Eagon Seconds, Sarel Pretorius and Riaan Viljoen - running from all angles on the field.

RW Kember performed admirably for the visitors, especially on the defence, and it was clear that lock Rudi Mathee for one was sorely missed.

The Leopards scored one try through wing Colin Lloyd.
