Currie Cup: Readers' team confirmed
Wed, 28 Oct 2009 16:39
We asked the readers to vote for your Currie Cup Team of the Tournament and as you can see, the votes came flooding in.
We tallied the votes and the results are out.
So without too much fuss, here's your selection!
15 - Joe Pietersen (Western Province):
By a proverbial country mile. Next best was Stefan Terblanché (Sharks), with Fabian Juries, Hennie Daniller (both Free State Cheetahs) and Riaan Viljoen (Griquas) also getting some readers' votes.
14 - Lionel Mapoe (Free State Cheetahs):
Also overwhelming. Francois Hougaard (Blue Bulls), was a distant second, with JP Pietersen (Sharks), Gerhard van den Heever (Blue Bulls) Gio Aplon (Western Province) and Fabian Juries (Free State Cheetahs) also getting the odd vote.
13 - Juan de Jongh (Western Province):
It doesn't get more convincing than this. He got all but two votes, who both went to Western Province
teammate Frikkie Welsh. Will the Bok selectors agree?!
12 - Wynand Olivier (Blue Bulls):
This was a close call, with Olivier edging Golden Lions rival Doppies la Grange by just two votes. Riaan Swanepoel (Griquas), Meyer Bosman (Free State Cheetahs), Juan de Jongh (Western Province) and Barry Geel (Griquas) also getting votes.
11 - Gio Aplon (Western Province):
It was oh so close or Lionel Mapoe (Free State Cheetahs) did the double, getting both the left-wing and right-wing positions. Aplon edged him by a single vote (do I hear calls for a recount?). Francois Hougaard (Blue Bulls), Johan Jackson (Lions), Jongi Nokwe (Free State Cheetahs) and Lwazi Mvovo (Sharks) also got votes.
10 - Jacques-Louis Potgieter (Free State Cheetahs):
He had strong competition from Sharks import Juan Hernandez, with Naas Olivier (Griquas) also running a good race. Bok star Morné Steyn (Blue Bulls) was the only
other flyhalf voted for.
9 - Sarel Pretorius (Griquas):
This was also overwhelming, with Jano Vermaak (Lions) at least 20 votes behind in second place, followed by Chris Jonck (Lions), Charl McLeod (Sharks), Dewald Duvenhage (Western Province) and Francois Hougaard (Blue Bulls).
8 - Luke Watson (Western Province):
The Bath-bound loose forward clearly impressed the readers enough to edge Willem Alberts (Golden Lions) and Ashley Johnson (Free State Cheetahs).
7 - Jean Deysel (Sharks):
Another closely-fought position, with Dewald Potgieter (Blue Bulls) next best, followed by Francois Louw (Western Province), Duane Vermeulen (Western Province) and Frans Viljoen (Free State Cheetahs).
6 - Francois Louw (Western Province):
Pretty one-sided, although Derrick Minnie (Lions), Heinrich Brüssow (Free State Cheetahs), Cobus Grobbelaar (Lions), Ashley Johnson (Free State
Cheetahs), Jonathan Mokuena (Griquas), Duane Vermeulen (Western Province), Deon Stegmann (Blue Bulls) and Dewald Potgieter (Blue Bulls) all seemed to find favour with at least one reader.
5 - Anton van Zyl (Western Province):
The WP success story dominated the votes, with David de Villiers (Free State Cheetahs) a distant second, followed buy Chris Jack (Western Province), Victor Matfield (Blue Bulls), Franco van der Merwe (Lions), David de Villiers (Free State Cheetahs) and Flip van der Merwe (Blue Bulls).
4 - Steven Sykes (Sharks):
More evenly contested, with Chris Jack (Western Province) and David de Villiers (Free State Cheetahs) also getting plenty of the votes. Victor Matfield (Blue Bulls), Anton van Zyl (Western Province) and Franco van der Merwe (Lions) also featured at No.4.
3 - WP Nel (Free State Cheetahs):
Another position that came close to a one-horse race. Kevin Buys (Lions) and
Coenie Oosthuizen (Free State Cheetahs) managed one vote each, but the possible (probable?) new Bok from the Cheetahs reigned supreme.
2 - Tiaan Liebenberg (Western Province):
He dominated the votes like he dominates on the rugby field. Winger-turned-hooker Craig Burden (Sharks) was second, ahead of Adriaan Strauss (Free State Cheetahs) and Derick Kuün (Blue Bulls).
1 - Wian du Preez (Free State Cheetahs):
Another good contest, with Wikus Blaauw (Western Province) getting close to an upset and Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira (Sharks) and Coenie Oosthuizen (Free State Cheetahs) getting one vote each.
