Currie Cup Final: Cheetah player ratings

Sat, 31 Oct 2009 20:45

The Blue Bulls became only the second South African team to secure a Super Rugby and Currie Cup double, when they held off a strong Free State Cheetahs comeback to win 36-24 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

In adding the Currie Cup title to their Super 14 crown, they joined the 1993 Transvaal team that won the Super 10 and Currie Cup titles.

There were many heroes on the day, along with a few silly moments.

Jan de Koning rates the Free State Cheetahs players:

15 Hennie Daniller:
Had a quiet start to the game and had a decent run on half-hour mark. Generally solid.
6/10

14 Lionel Mapoe:
It is a disgrace that he is not in the Bok team. He is so much better than a player like Earl Rose.
7/10

13 Corné Uys:
Great support play and a few good runs. But was generally well looked after by the Bulls defenders.
6/10

12 Meyer Bosman:
He kept the Bulls busy all afternoon and showed good kicking skills. Great asset at No.12, especially when taking the ball up.
6/10

11 Danwel Demas:
Did not have too many first half chances, but looked for work. Gave away a careless penalty. Still remains a quality player.
6/10

10 Jacques-Louis Potgieter:
He missed first kick at goal - from right in front, on the 22. Then there was a crucial knock two minutes from half-time, although he made amends with a great drop-goal in 49th minute. Not the kind of goodbye he would have liked to have given the Cheetahs.
5/10

9 JP Joubert:
Solid, rather than spectacular and gave away a silly penalty.
5/10

8 Ashley Johnson:
He made a crucial error at a scrum and was generally outplayed by Pierre Spies.
5/10

7 Frans Viljoen:
Really strong run for crucial try in 32nd min - the Cheetahs' first try. Then there was a crucial offload for Nico Breedt's try. One of the best for the Cheetahs.
8/10

6 Heinrich Brüssow:
As always he was busy at breakdown and a real menace. Also produced good support play. Great battle with Deon Stegmann.
6/10

5 David de Villiers:
He is the rock in the Cheetahs pack and probably unlucky not to get a Bok call-up. High workrate.
7/10

4 Nico Breedt:
He produced an incredible hit on Bryan Habana to stop a potentially dangerous move and produced a high workrate.
7/10

3 WP Nel:
He started getting stronger as the game went on and a good workrate - strong on the run. This man is also unlucky not to have gotten a Bok call-up.
6/10

2 Adriaan Strauss (captain):
He lead from the front as always and had a few really good runs. Another unlucky player when Bok tour spots were handed out.
7/10

1 Wian du Preez:
He got better after a few wonky early scrums and then started to work on Werner Kruger. Great all-round game.
6/10

Replacements:

16 Richardt Strauss (on for Adriaan Strauss in 63rd min):
He gave away a silly penalty in 67th minute and then got yellow-carded in the 74th minute for spouting verbals towards match officials. Cost his team.
0/10

17 Coenie Oosthuizen (on for Du Preez 63rd min):
Produced a good work rate, but no real impact. Also spoilt a good game with some silly stuff after the full-time whistle. The young man will still earn to lose with dignity.
0/10

18 Izak van der Westhuizen:
Did not take to the field.

19 Lukas Floors (on for Johnson in 67th min):
Failed to make a real impact. Not enough time on the field.

20 Tewis de Bruyn (on for Joubert 60th min):
He tried hard, but struggled to make an impact.
5/10

21 Louis Strydom:
Did not take to the field.

22 Fabian Juries (on for Lionel Mapoe in the 67th min):
One or two darts, but not enough time to make an impact.
