Pumas lock Van der Walt suspended

Pumas lock Eduard van der Walt has been suspended for two weeks after he was found guilty of dangerous play during his side’s 22-21 victory over the Blue Bulls in Nelspruit last weekend.
Citing officer Freek Burger cited Van der Walt for dangerous play after he recklessly charged into a ruck and made contact with the side of the face of Bulls No 8 Dewald Potgieter in the 78th minute of the game. He received a yellow card from referee Stuart Berry and was cited for a breach of Law 10.4 (k) for dangerous play in a ruck/ maul.
The Pumas lock appeared before a SARU Judicial hearing earlier this week in Bloemfontein, which was chaired by Advocate Jannie Lubbe.
The player pleaded not guilty. His defence testified that at the moment he joined the ruck, the Bulls player was in the process of getting to his feet and this action contributed to contact being made with the face/neck area. He also argued that he did not target the head area of his opponent.
Lubbe, after considering all relevant facts and available video evidence, deemed on a balance of probability that Van der Walt acted in breach of Law 10.4 (k).
As a result Van der Walt has been suspended from all rugby for two weeks from August 27, 2010 up to and including September 11, 2010.
The player has the right to appeal.
