Boland stay unbeaten

The Boland Cavaliers lead 17-6 at a stage in the first half, courtesy of tries by lock Ockie van Zyl and hooker Chadley Wenn, coupled with seven points from the boot of fullback Nico Scheepers.

*Elsewhere Selom Gavor ran in a hat-trick of tries as the Golden Lions hammered the Welwitschias 66-12 in their provincial tournament match at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.

Left wing Gavor completed his hat-trick as early as the first minute of the second half as the Golden Lions ran in 10 tries to two in a lop-sided clash played in front of crowd of 2500 people.

*Meanwhile the Griffons have scored no less than eleven tries to beat the Leopards by 76-26 in the two sides encounter in the new provincial competition at the HT Pelatona Project stadium in Welkom.

A hat-trick of tries each by winger Selvyn Davids and fly half George Whitehead helped the hosts to an impressive victory over a Leopards side that lacked much of the lustre that it has become famous for the last couple of seasons.

*In a not so high scoring match between the Blue Bulls and Free State XV, the Blue Bulls scored 17 unanswered points in the last 10 minutes to beat the Free State XV 20 – 17 in their Provincial Cup match at Loftus Versveld in Pretoria.

Three tries from Tapiwa Tsomondo, Manie Libbok and Callie Visagie in the last 10 minutes of the match ensured that the Blue Bulls claimed their first win of the competition in front of their home fans.

Boland 37 – 18 EP Kings

Coming from a 17-11 lead in the first half. The Boland Cavaliers were quick out of the block as Scheepers kicked over a penalty before eightman Zandre Jordaan went over to make it 25-11.

Winnaar intercepted on his own try line before sprinting the length of the field to score under the posts to reignite the slim chance the EP Kings had at that stage of the match. The kick was taken by flyhalf Simon Bolze to make it 25-18 .

Two tries by the experienced winger Danwel Demas not only wrapped up the try scoring bonus-point, but also secured the result. The final try of the match saw him collect the ball after it had been kicked through and the five pointer but to bed any chances the EP Kings had. With Scheepers adding the extras the score was 37-18 and despite some late action the score remained the same until the final whistle.

The match started with a flurry of scoring as Golden Lions’ lock Luvoyiso Lusaseni crossed for a try in the second minute before Van Zyl dotted down in the fourth minute to make the score 7-5 in favour of the Lions.

The visitors soon settled into a rhythm and they eased to a 38-5 halftime lead thanks to two tries from Gavor and tries from hooker Ramone Samuels, right wing Koch Marx and Bell.

Griffons 76 – 26 Leopards

After the kick-off in the first half it was clear that it was going to be a long afternoon for the Leopards as the Griffons scored three tries in the first 20 minutes, with Whitehead converting all of them after an early penalty for a quick lead of 24-0.

Winger Norman Nelson opened the Griffons tally in the second half with Whitehead completing his hat-trick soon thereafter as the Leopards simply had no answers on defence for the attacks.

Replacement prop Roan Grobbelaar took the Leopards to double digits with his try in the 54th minute, but that and other five pointers later by replacement Leon du Plessis and centre Adrian Vermeulen at the end of the day meant nothing against a barging Griffons attack.

A brace of tries by Griffons centre Vuyo Mboto, who was solid on defence as well, saw the hosts complete a well rounded performance to send the Leopards back home with their tails well and truly between their legs.

Blue Bulls 20 – 17 Free State XV

Blue Bulls fullback Manie Libbok opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a penalty as the hosts gained an early advantage.

However, the Free Staters hit back with the opening try of the game some 12 minutes later. A super counter-attacking move started by winger Mapthuta Dolo was finished off by prop Ox Nche after the front ranker gathered an in-field chip kick from flanker Ntokozo Vidima.

Flyhalf Pieter-Steyn de Wet added the extras as the Free Staters took a 7 – 3 lead into the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Free State XV extended their lead to double figures courtesy of a converted try from Ntokozo Vidima.

However, the Bulls were far from done and a superb last quarter from the hosts saw them pull off a miracle victory.

Blue Bulls doubled up almost immediately as a Joshua Stander break from the kick off set up a good attacking phase for the hosts. JT Jackson was once again involved as the centre popped a pass to fullback Manie Libbok who cut past some would-be tacklers to score and bring the Blue Bulls to within four points.

A typical Blue Bulls driving maul try in the 76th minute saw Callie Visagie crash over. Joshua Stander converted superbly from the corner to put the final nail in the coffin on a superb 20 – 17 comeback win for the Blue Bulls.
