Sharks XV secure first win

The 48-18 win over Welwitschias is the Sharks XV first victory in the tournament.

Outside centre Marius Louw grabbed a hat-trick of tries while flyhalf Tristan Tedder enjoyed a fine personal match as he ended with 23 points courtesy of a try, six conversions and two penalties.

The other fixture saw the Blue Bulls go down to Golden Lions 38-17 at  Alberton Rugby Club.The Golden Lions ran in five tries pass they opponents.

Meanwhile Griquas also recorded an 27-17 victory over the Eagles in Kimberley.

Eastern Province (EP) Kings went down to Border, 28-14. The victory over EP Kings saw Border move second on the log.

Simon Bolze crossed the line for the Kings, in the 28th minute of the game, after receiving the ball off a scrum. Bolze converted his own try, pushing the Kings 7-0 up over the Bulldogs; a lead which they held through to halftime.

Border entered the score sheet early in the second half, as a brilliant run put Michael Makase in the corner. Oliver Zono converted, leveling the score at 7-7.

Replacement, Hendri Storm, smashed over the try-line in the 61st minute giving the lead to Border for the first time in the match. The visitor kept pilling on the pressure and was rewarded.

However, the King’s Courtney Winnaar crossed over the line in the corner after the hooter to have the final say in the match. Making the final score the 28-14 to Border.

Griquas 27-17 SWD Eagles

Eagles was the first to draw blood, with hooker Mark Pretorius scoring the first try of the match. However, is was not long before Clinton Swart went over to and covert his own try to equalize.

Tries by wings Coertzen and Bock added to the Griquas success.

Griquas recorded they third win in the tournament, securing them the top spot on the log.

Sharks XV 48-18 Welwitschias

The hosts took an early lead through a Tedder penalty but it was the Welwitschias who scored the first try when fullback Riaan van Zyl went over for an unconverted score in the sixth minute.

The Sharks XV were stung into action and the impressive Louw grabbed his first try in the eighth minute.

The visitors narrowed the gap to two points when flyhalf Shaun Kaizemi slotted a 20th minute penalty but the rest of the half belonged to the hosts as Tedder and Louw both scored tries before halftime as the Sharks XV went to the break leading 24-8.

The Welwitschias started the second half in fine fashion and they narrowed the gap to 24-18 thanks to tries from left wing Russell van Wyk and flank Rohan Kitshoff.

But the Sharks XV soon reasserted their dominance with Louw completing his hat-trick in the 51st minutes before replacement lock Wian Vosloss and replacement fullback Curwin Bosch both scored tries.

The half time score at Umlazi was 24-8, the Sharks XV score six tries in the match, ensuring a victory of last placed Welwitschias.

Golden Lions 38-17 Blue Bulls

Golden Lions, coming off a win, made all the early running as they eased to a 10-0 lead after eight minutes. The Blue Bulls'  flyhalf Joshua Stander narrowed the deficit to seven points with an eighth minute penalty.

The lead was extended when the home team's inside centre Jacques Nel crashed over for a converted try in the 25th minute, but the Blue Bulls kept themselves in the contest thanks to a try from flanker Tapiwa Tsomondo.

The second half was more of the same as the Golden Lions picked up tries from outside centre Stokkies Hanekom and No.8 Ruaan Lerm with the Blue Bulls only able to reply with a try from hooker Corniel Els as they were held out by some impressive defence from a Golden Lions who were reduced to 14 men in the 67th minute after scrumhalf Ricky Schroeder was yellow-carded.
