REPORT: Griquas consolidated their position in the top four of the Currie Cup competition with a bonus-point victory over the Boland Cavaliers in Kimberley on Thursday.

The 46-22 win for the home team saw them move ahead of the Blue Bulls into the third position in the standings.

While they drop back down to fourth, as the Bulls play the Pumas this weekend, Griquas will remain in the play-off spot - as neither the Golden Lions nor Western Province (who play each other) can catch them this week.

Centre Clinton Swart was in fine form for the home team, scoring 21 points - with a try, five conversions and two penalties.

Boland were outplayed and enjoyed precious little possession.

It was only a couple of late consolation tries that gave their scoreline some respectability.

A Swart penalty in the fourth minute got Griquas off the mark.

Eight minutes later, captain Adriaan Coertzen timed his run well to collect a pass from flyhalf Elgar Watts at pace to score the opening try of the game, before Swart kicked another penalty for the home team to lead 11-0.

Boland eventually got off the mark in the 22nd minute, when fullback Theuns Kotze landed a penalty - after missing an earlier attempt.

But Griquas hit straight back with a try, as right wing Edries Arendse dotted down. Swart added the two points for the conversion.

Matters got worse for Boland when Shaun Adendorff was yellow-carded for a dangerous neck tackle.

They felt the impact immediately when Watts produced a perfect show-and-go, along with a side-step - scoring the third try. Swart converted.

Swart turned try-scorer shortly after the restart with some strong running, which secured the bonus point. He converted his own score for Griquas to lead 32-3.

Boland kept fighting and they were rewarded when captain and hooker Clemen Lewis scored in the 50th minute and Kotze converted as the visitors moved into double figures.

Watts then displayed good skills again to score his second try - taking advantage of an opening in the Boland defensive structure. Swart was again on target with the conversion.

Griquas started piling on the misery as flank Wendal Wehr grabbed the sixth and final try for his team after some good interplay between the backs and forwards.

Strong-running replacement Craig Pheiffer hit the gap well to score for Boland with nine minutes to play and then flyhalf Adriaan Carelse intercepted a kick ahead to sprint half the length of the field to dot down under the posts. He converted his own try.

Man of the match: Shaun McDondald and Shaun Adendorff were physical, sometimes a bit over the top - which earned the latter 10 minutes in the sin bin. Wendal Wehr was rewarded for a busy game with a try and Wandile Putuma carried well. The Griquas backline was littered with strike power - with inside centre Clinton Swart scoring 21 points. However, our award goes to Griquas flyhalf Elgar Watts - not just for two great tries, through some sublime stepping, but also the manner in which he directed those speedy outside backs into spaces.
