Sharks star gets 'six-month' ban

Sale Sharks centre Lee Thomas has been handed one of the heftiest bans yet for striking an opponent, when a Rugby Football Union (RFU) Disciplinary Panel ruled that he should be suspended for 14 weeks - effectively sidelining him for the next six months.
The lengthy ban comes after Thomas had been found guilty of striking Bath flyhalf Shaun Berne during the Guinness Premiership match at Edgeley Park on March 28 - a game the Sharks won 22-6.
The Australian, Berne, left the field with three teeth missing and required emergency dental work.
Thomas was charged with a breach of regulation 5.12: '... any conduct which is prejudicial to the interests of the Union or the game.'
This is in stark contrast to the normal practice of charging players, accused of striking opponents, under law 10.4 (a): 'Punching or striking...'
Thomas has been suspended until June 3, and then from August 22 until October 17 - to take into account the off season in the English domestic game and European club competitions.
He can resume playing on October 18, 2008.
It means he is effectively out of the game for six months.
Thomas can appeal against the ban.
