Triple boost for Sarries

Thu, 24 Apr 2008 14:55

Three of Saracens first team squad have committed their futures to the club with David Seymour, Andy Kyriacou and Rodd Penney all putting pen to paper on new contracts.

The English trio have all signed new deals that will keep them at the North London club until 2010 and with the club preparing for the biggest game in its history on Sunday in the Heineken Cup semifinal against Munster, they all admitted it was an easy decision to make.

The 23-year-old Seymour is fast approaching 100 appearances for Saracens having first burst on the scene in the 2004/05.

The 29-year-old Penney made his 50th appearance for the club last weekend and since joining at the start of last season, he has been a regular on the scoresheet, crossing the line 15 times.

It’s been a mixed season for 25-year-old hooker Kyriacou whose impressive displays saw him claim a regular first team spot, only to suffer a knee injury in training earlier this month which is expected to rule him out until December.

Seymour has been battling it out for a regular starting place this season with Richard Hill and more recently homegrown loose forward Don Barrell.

"I'm pleased to sign a new deal and my number one priority for next season to try and get as many first team starts for the club as possible and then see what happens from there," explained the England Saxons player.

"This is an important time in my career so I did have to think about things, but Saracens is an exciting club to be part of and I believe signing a new deal is best for my future.

"There is a real buzz around the place ahead of this weekend’s game and we realise we have the chance to achieve something really special this season," added Seymour.

Penney joined from London Irish at the start of the 2006/07 season having been a regular at outside centre for the Exiles. But it's been on the wing where he has played most of his games for Saracens where his quick and powerful running has seen him cross the line eight times already this season.

"I'm really pleased," said Penney of his signing.

"It's been an amazing team to be part of in the past two years so it wasn't a difficult choice to sign on for another two years. The brand of rugby we are playing really suits me and they are also a good bunch of boys to be around. There are lots of exciting things to look forward to in the next few years and that was a big factor in my decision," added Penney.

Kyriacou spent six months on loan at Munster last season but his knee injury rules him out of Sunday's clash however, he has already started his recovery following surgery.

"Up until earlier this month, the season was going really well for me and I'd been getting a lot of first team rugby so it was a big blow to pick up the injury," explained Kyriacou.

"But I'm really pleased to be staying at Saracens for another two years and I'm already in the gym and trying to be back as soon as possible to be part of things for next season," he added.
