Quins sign headbutting Taione

Fri, 09 May 2008 13:29

Harlequins have announced the signing of Sharks discard and Tongan international Epi Taione.

Taione has played for English Premiership sides Newcastle and Sale Sharks in the past.

Since then, he has played for the Japanese side Sanyo Wild Knights and Tonga's national team in last year's Rugby World Cup.

Following that he made the move to South Africa, to join the Sharks in their 2008 Super 14 campaign.

However, his stay in Durban was brief as he was banned for eight weeks after a reckless headbutt during his team's 13-all draw against the Hurricanes in Week Eight of the Super 14. The Sharks subsequently tore up his contract.

Weighing in at 120kg and standing at 1.93m tall, Taione is a versatile player who can play a number of positions.

He will be a valuable new asset to the Quins squad and joins them towards the end of July.

Director of Rugby, Dean Richards, says: "Epi [Taione] is an extremely versatile player, capable of playing at the top level in the forwards, at No.6 or No.8, and also in the backs at centre or wing.

"He is an extremely strong and powerful player, and his ability will serve us well. I am looking forward to welcoming him into the squad towards the end of July," added Richards.
