Sale targeting Thomond Park win

Tue, 21 Oct 2008 15:54

Despite the setback of a defeat to Munster on the weekend England international Richard Wigglesworth says he and his Sale Sharks “can still reach the quarter-finals."

While it was another strong showing, particularly early in the second half, the Sale side eventually slumped to a bonus-point-less 24-16 defeat and now face an uphill battle to progress from 'the Group of Death.'

Philippe Saint-Andre’s men will now be in desperate need of an away win at Thomond Park. Unfortunately for them though that is not something that has easily been done in the past – in fact just once, out of the previous 35 attempts in the Heineken Cup, have a visiting team left on the winning side.

Wigglesworth though insists it is not impossible and that, given the tough tasks ahead of Munster, they still believe they will get the job done.

"It was massively disappointing to lose but we're still in the competition,

"Now Munster have got two tough games on the bounce against Clermont Auvergne, so we need a favour there and then we need to go and beat Munster at Thomond Park.

"For now we'll get back to the EDF Energy Cup and then the Guinness Premiership, we'll look to re-group and when our two back-to-back games against Montauban come around in December, we're going to have to ensure that we are on top of our game. But we've still got every confidence that we can still qualify from this group.

"The first thing that our skipper Juan Lobbe said to us afterwards was `Let's believe', because we know we've got a group of players with the quality to get us out of this group still."
