Mooloo Men end long drought

Sun, 10 Jan 2010 10:07

Waikato ended a 12-year drought when they won the New Zealand Sevens title, beating Bay of Plenty 21-14 in the Final in the Queenstown holiday resort on Sunday.

The Mooloo Men came back from being 0-14 down in the Cup Final, which went down to the wire - before captain Tim Mikkelson scored a long range individual try with time up.

Waikato were pinned inside their own goal area when the final hooter sounded.

Just when it seemed as if the match would go to extra time, Waikato refused to let the ball die before Mikkelson stepped a marker 10 metres out from his own line then outsprinted Zar Lawrence in a desperate run to the tryline 90 metres away.

Bay of Plenty dominated the first spell and led 14-0 after tries to Adam McGarvey and Mathew Hodson.

Waikato stayed in the match thanks to a fine individual try from his own side of halfway by Frank Halai just short of half-time, before Glen Robinson crossed after the break to level the scores.

* North Harbour won the Plate competition with a 38-19 win over Hawke's Bay in the Final, while the Bowl Final produced a boilover result when Horowhenua-Kapiti shocked Auckland 21-15.

Horowhenua-Kapiti trailed 0-15 at half-time, but prevailed after three second-half tries - the last of them to captain Ashley Drake.
