Tonga's David Halaifonua was cited and then suspended for the foot-tripping of England's Mathew Turner in their pool game on day one of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens World Series taking place in Wellington.
The incident occurred in the ninth minute of the match and the referee penalised Halaifonua, who was chasing a kick upfield at the time.
Halaifonua appeared before Judicial Officer Peter Hobbs after the game and Hobbs found that the alleged foul play was not intentional, but was reckless. As this was a low end offence, Hobbs gave Halaifonua a one game suspension. Hobbs took into account his previous clean record, the early admission to the offence, and the fact that he was apologetic for the injury caused to Turner.
Halaifonua was forced to miss Tonga's match against USA.
