Samoan captain's costly tackle

Sat, 06 Feb 2010 11:21

Samoan captain and No.7 Lolo Lui has been suspended for two games for a dangerous tackle in their Cup semifinal match against New Zealand on Day Two of the Wellington leg of the International Rugby Board Sevens World Series on Saturday.

Lui was cited and appeared at a judicial hearing for the dangerous tackle on New Zealand No.3, Fritz Lee, in the sixth minute of the second half of a game Samoa won 24-13.

Lui appeared before Judicial Officer Peter Hobbs and accepted the tackle was dangerous, but said it was unintentional.

He missed the Cup Final between Samoa and Fiji - won 19-14 by the Fijians, to hand them the Wellington title and allow the Pacific Islanders to close the gap on Series leaders New Zealand to just four points.

The Samoans will also be without the services of their captain for the opening match of the next tournament, Round Four of the IRB Series ion Las Vegas next week.

* Welsh No.10 Justin Tipuric has also been suspended, but for just one match, after he was found guilty of a charge of using a swinging arm into the head of a French player.

He was forced to miss the Bowl Final between Wales and France - won 7-5 by Wales.

The incident happened in Wales' 17-12 win over Argentina in the Bowl semifinal.

Wales captain, No.11 Chris Davies was cleared to play in the Final after he was cited for an alleged dangerous tackle in the seventh minute in the same match.

Davies received a yellow card at the time.
