Kenya beat Boks in Nairobi Final

Mon, 07 Jun 2010 09:14

Defending champions Kenya came back from a 5-12 half-time deficit to beat Emerging Springboks of South Africa 17-12 and retain their Safari Sevens title on Sunday.

Under the driving rain, wing Sidney Ashioya sliced through the tight Boks defence to score the winning try in the last minute to salvage some pride for the hosts after a disappointing season in the IRB Sevens Series, where they finished eighth.

Kenya opened the scoring early in the match, but the Springboks came back with two tries before Ashioya, who played a pivotal role in the fightback after being recalled to the national side, touched down to reduce the deficit to 10-12.

Kenyan skipper Humphrey Kayange said the victory was the reward for their efforts over the course of a long season.

"We started well in the IRB Series, but we struggled in the end. This victory is very important as we start to rebuild the team for the next season," he said.

Ponsoby RFC of New Zealand beat French side Les Bleus 26-17 to win the Plate, while Argentina claimed the Bowl when they thrashed Zimbabwe 14-7.
