Cairns to miss Munster showdown

Tue, 02 Sep 2008 15:36

Edinburgh centre Ben Cairns is set to miss his side's Magner's League opening round clash against Munster, due to an injury picked up during pre-season.

Cairns is expected to be ruled out of Edinburgh's first team duties for at least a month after a scan revealed that he had damaged the medial ligament in his left knee.

The Scotland centre captained Edinburgh in the club's opening pre-season friendly match against English champions, London Wasps on Saturday, August 23.

But last season's Young Player of the Year was withdrawn from the action after 23 minutes after damaging his knee in a collision with an opponent.

"We will be managing Ben's injury carefully and we expected him to be sidelined for a number of weeks," said Edinburgh head physiotherapist, TJ Johansson.

Although Cairns may not be available for Friday night's Magners League opener, there will be at least 15 other Scotland internationals available for selection, including record points scorer Chris Paterson on his return.
