Delve: 'There is no Wales guarantee'

Fri, 29 Jan 2010 09:30

Gloucester star Gareth Delve has admitted that he is thinking about his future and, with a World Cup ahead in 2011, he could well consider a possible move back to the Magners League.

Delve, speaking to the Western Telegraph, insisted that he had received no offer other than the one he has from Gloucester and that, while he would have to think long and hard about whether he would remain at the Cherry and Whites, he is very happy at Kingsholm.

Capped four times by his country, Delve admits he has ambitions to be a part of Warren Gatland's World Cup squad but is not convinced that moving back to Wales would guarantee him a spot.

Delve has been strongly linked with the Cardiff Blues. With Xavier Rush expected to depart the region in the summer many pundits believe that the Gloucester man is the ideal candidate to step into his shoes.

"I'm in discussions with the club [Gloucester] and I'd love to stay,” he said to the Western Telegraph.

Talking about whether playing at Gloucester had an affect on his international selection Delve said: "I've put a lot of work into being part of the Gloucester set-up, I'm enjoying being part of it and it's a great team to be involved with, but the decision rests with people above me.

"There are merits to having guys playing in the Magners League because there are elements the Wales management can control like training days because they've got an agreement with the regions. It’s something that works well with the Irish provinces.

"But in the Guinness Premiership you get games week in, week out that test you whereas in the Magners it would be a big surprise if, say, Connacht beat Munster. That is not the case in the Guinness with a club like Leeds for example.

"It's all rumours about a move to the Blues, there have been no offers and the only one I'm considering is the one from Gloucester.

"But there's the World Cup next year and you have to think about your options so it's not clear cut. There has been no contact with the Wales management and who can say whether I'd be in Warren Gatland’s squad?

"It's all a bit up in the air, there's no guarantee to say that if I came back to Wales I'd be in the Wales squad."
