Relief for the Scarlets

Fri, 05 Mar 2010 23:34

At Parc y Scarlets on Friday night in a Round 13 match of the Magners League, the home side were full value for their 25-8 win over Ulster. By half-time the Scarlets were up 15-3.

The Scarlets scored three triers to one and deserved their victory.Having first Davbid Pocock and then Ryan Caldwell in the sin bin did not help the Ulster cause at all.

The Scarlets went into the match as underdogs after winning just one of their last five matches in the Magners League while Ulster lost last on Boxing Day. The victory has broken a vicious circle.

The Scarlets' first try was thanks to the strong running of Llandovery's Nigerian wing, Joe Ajuwa, who got close to the line. The Scarlets bashed and then went wide for  and easy try for Fenby which Priestland converted..

Wallaby David  Lyons made the second try when he broke from a scrum and then gave Knoyle a back-hand flip for the wing to score. Priestland then goaled a penalty and the home side led 15-0 after 26 minutes.

Just before half-time Humphreys goaled a penalty. 15-3.

Right at the start of the second half the Ulstermen attacked, Isaac Boss broke, burly BJ Botha carried it on and Paddy Wallace went over. 15-8. It was the end of Ulster's challenge as the home side dominated and may well have had more of a reward than just Priestland's excellent try as he broke and swerved to score.

The Scarlets would dearly have loved a fourth try for the bonus point.
