Cardiff make Delve a 'strong offer'

Tue, 16 Mar 2010 13:30

The Cardiff Blues have offered a contract to Welsh No.8 Gareth Delve to play for them next season.

Delve's contract with Gloucester expires at the end of the season and he now has some decisions to make, as the newly formed Melbourne Rebels are reported to have targeted him.

The Rebels have already signed English flyhalf Danny Cipriani and Delve could be their second marquee signing should he choose to move to the Australian side.

A recent call-up for Wales in the Six Nations may also influence Delve's decision as a move to Australia as a move to Cardiff would greatly improve his chances of further selection for the national team.

"We would love Gareth to sign for the Blues and we've made him a strong offer," Blues coach Dai Young told the South Wales Echo.

"We feel it’s a good option for Gareth, but he won't be rushed into anything.

"I don't think Gareth has ruled out staying at Gloucester next season.

"But if he has Wales aspirations he would surely be better off with us. A big factor in his decision may be down to whether he wants to play for Wales.

"If he goes to Melbourne that could be difficult.

"I haven't a clue what Gareth will decide. We've met him and talked to him. Now it’s up to Gareth."
